6 New Kids on the Block: Xi’an Bar and Club Round-Up
By Susan Martin , eChinacities.com

With the number of tourists passing through and foreigners living in Xi’an the number of bars is ever increasing, especially those catering to foreigners. This is a round-up of some of the newest bars, late-night restaurants and clubs since we last wrote about Xi’an’s nightlife. Be sure to check some of them out, they are worth it, and it never hurts to expand your scope.

1) Morphine Livehouse (魔啡酒吧)

With beer towers shaped like the Eiffel Tower, Morphine is not lacking cheesy Chinese touches on an overall Western-style bar. The staff are polite and there are a bunch of Chinese cover bands that play the venue. Although all menus are in Chinese, some of the staff speak English, and it is the perfect place to practice your Chinese if you are learning. Or you can always try the typical ‘point and see what happens’ trick.

2) Caprice Restaurant and Bar

Caprice opened just before summer. Perhaps more food oriented than alcohol, the atmosphere in this new place is great and it shouldn’t be missed if you are living in Xi’an. This is a classy place and there is a wide range of Western food that tastes like it is supposed to; from pizza and pasta to burgers and desserts. The drinks here are good, and this is a good place to go if you want to go on a quieter night out.

3) Loren Pub Bar

One of the newer clubs in Xi’an, this place is a pub and a club at the same time: this is a great choice if you want to go dancing, or if you want to show friends from home what clubs in China look like. The location of this place is also perfect.

Add: 15 Yuantian Pinxi’an, Huancheng Xilu, Lianhu District, Xi’an

Getting There: take bus 720 to Qingfenglu Dongkou stop (庆丰路东口站).

4) Midnight Kitchen and Bar (深夜食堂)

The drinks here are good and reliable, and they definitely know how to chill their beers (which is always a plus in China). Other than that, the food is also really good and there is a very wide range, with something for everybody, and seasonal specialties. The atmosphere is perfect for a visit with friends, as there is good music but it is still a suitable bar to chat too. English menus are still in progress but the staff speaks some English so they will be able to help you with your order.

5) Jelly Bar

Located in a traditional siheyuan courtyard-style house inside a hutong, Jelly bar has a fusion interior, tastefully combining traditional and modern styles. There is a stage, and there are a few local bands and people who will come and play, making it a super friendly venue. The owner walks around and plays his guitar sometimes too – so there is never a lack of entertainment in this bar. The cocktails aren’t too shabby either, with alcohol flowing freely, and there is a wide range of imported beer to choose from with something to suit all tastes.

Add: 7 Shunchengxiang, Xiaonanmenli, Beilin District, Xi’an

6) Nemo Bar 尼莫酒吧

Another relaxing new  Xi’an bar, Nemo Bar is quiet enough for conversation to be flowing, but still has a lot of music playing in the background. There is a good selection of drinks here, starting from imported bottled beer (priced between 30 and 60 RMB), and there is also an extensive cocktail list. The bartenders are good with the cocktails, and they are also not stingy on alcohol content. There should be a food menu developing soon too, so head over and give it a try before everyone else discovers this bar too!

I've never been to any of these places even though I'm living in Xi'an... not sure whether they're really worth a try :/
