A group of more than 50 teachers will be released from detention this week following the conclusion of an investigation into a China visa scam. The teachers have been unable to leave university dormitories in Changchun, Jilin province, since a man that had organised their employment was arrested in connection to a scam.

The stranded teachers have spent months in limbo in China as a criminal investigation into the accused, Owen Wong, was in process.

Charl Venter, a spokesperson for the parents of the teachers, told thesouthafrican.com that local authorities in Changchun have confirmed that the educators would be flown home this week. He added that the Chinese government would be footing the bill for the return flights.

Venter thanked the government for securing the teachers’ safe return, and said the parents have “no hard feelings” towards China, its people or the police. He also thanked the Changchun university for accommodating and feeding the group during their detention.

"Quite simply, the investigation into Owen Wong has been concluded. All of the teachers co-operated with the investigation and had their versions of events verified. The reason they couldn’t leave China was that they were part of a criminal investigation,” he explained.
