China Job Ads for Tech and Government Roles Discriminate Against Women

China job ads for technology firms and government agencies discriminate against women by advertising for “men only” roles and touting the attractiveness of their female employees as benefits, a report has claimed.

Shocked Chinese woman

A report by Human Rights Watch (HRW) looked at more than 36,000 job advertisements posted on social media, company websites and recruitment platforms between 2013 and 2018.

They concluded that sexist recruitment practices have lead to a decrease in the proportion of women working in top tech and government roles.

Some companies and agencies had published ads for “male only” or “men preferred" roles, while others called for female applicants to be “aesthetically pleasing” and “trim”.

Telecoms giants Hauwei, Baidu, Tencent and Alibaba were also found to have been advertising the beauty of their female employees in recruitment campaigns, with the latter referring to them as “Ali beauties” and “goddesses”.

HRW said such practices reflect China’s “traditional and deeply discriminatory” views that women are less committed to their work roles as they should be concerned with family life.

Alibaba responded by saying that one-third of its founders and managers are women, but vowed to ensure better compliance with their policy of equal opportunities in the future.

Tencent apologised and said it would take swift action to ensure such errors do not happen again.

Baidu said the job postings do not align with its values and insisted its female employees are respected, adding that it had already identified and removed the offending adverts before the HRW report.

Hauwei meanwhile said it would make sure future recruitment materials are “fully sensitive of gender equality”.

The report also found bad practices in China’s public bodies, with nearly one-fifth of recruitment ads for the civil service quoting “men only” and “men preferred” in 2018.
