Three Romanian nationals have been arrested by Shanghai police for their involvement in a credit card scam to withdraw money from cash machines, 200,000 RMB at a time.
The three had all arrived in the city separately via Russia and Malaysia and were caught on February 3.
The police became suspicious after five banks around the city reported that a number of blank bank cards containing only magnetic strips and no account holder details had been retained by their ATM machines.
The police tracked them down using surveillance footage and the three were apprehended along with 100 blank bank cards and information from 200 cards that was illegally obtained.
According to the police involved in the case, ATM scams are at their peak in the run-up to Spring Festival as ATM’s have the highest rate of transactions.
