A wild black bear was shot by police after it wandered into a middle school in Raohe, Heilongjiang yesterday. The students were quickly evacuated from their dorms when the bear was sighted.

The bear was found outside of a teacher’s dormitory and had broken a few of the building’s glass windows. The bear then entered a school building. Local forest rangers, armed police, and firefighters rushed to the scene.

“When we arrived, the bear was on a rampage. It roared at us. There was a risk that someone would get wounded,” said a forest ranger. Police blockaded the road outside the school for the safety of those nearby. In order to avoid injury, the police decided to kill the bear on the spot.

Raohe is located near the Wusuli River (Ussuri River to Russians), part of the northern border between China and Russia. Bears often cross the river between the forests of southern Russia into northern China. In August this year, a local black bear spooked tourists attending an event in the same county.
