On June 5, a story regarding a Zhengzhou policewoman who was mistakenly arrested as a prostitute began making headlines across the country.

53 year-old policewoman Wang, from Shangqiu, Henan, paid her daughter a visit on June 3. At around 23:00 that evening, Wang heard a knock at the door. After looking through the peephole, Wang saw that the men were wearing police uniforms, and so she let them in.

After opening the door however, seven or eight men rushed and starting hitting Wang in the face. Amid the violence, Wang demanded that the men proved that they were policemen. When the men replied stating, “The proof is in the uniform!” Wang said, “You’ve made a mistake. I’m a police officer too!” Wang then brought out her police ID, though the men then dragged Wang and her daughter all the way down from the 22nd to the 1st floor of the apartment building, and told them that they were being taken the local police station.  

After being taken to the police station on Zhengzhou’s Wenhua Lu, no other police officers seemed to pay them any mind. Eventually, the other policemen realized that they had got the wrong woman and apologized to Wang emphatically, and let her and her daughter go. It was later reported that the police were originally under orders to find and arrest a known prostitute.
