Shengli Road Pedestrian Street: Nanchang’s Bustling Commercial Centre

Nanchang Shengli Road Pedestrian Street

Nanchang Shengli Pedestrian Street has a history of over 100 years. Situated in the city centre, this street has been a symbol of the city’s bustling commerce since its very beginning. The street, which begins at the southern part of Zhongshan Road and stretches northwards towards the Dieshan intersection, is the first pedestrianised street in the city. The street is 960 metres long and 20 metres wide, with eight green areas and 100 benches scattered along the street. Shops selling a diverse range of products from photography material to jewellery and glasses to designer boutiques line this popular commercial stretch. A number of well-known eateries from China and abroad can also be found here, as can all the predictable chains like MacDonald’s and KFC.

Thanks to the wide range of products and services that are concentrated here, Shengli Road Pedestrian Street has become the most popular recreation area in the city and one of the top choices for shopaholics and people watchers – it’s definitely one of the best places to catch a glimpse of modern China and its burgeoning consumerist culture. Perhaps to counteract this impression or in an attempt to keep memories of the area’s history alive, a number of statues depicting ordinary people at work are dotted along the street.

Afternoon and evening times are when the street is at its busiest; but ultimately it is the night-time scenery with lit up lanterns that pulls in the biggest crowds. Each shop along the street has its own style and character, which together with the friendly service, makes these shops inviting and pleasant to visit. Prices in these shops quite reasonable for the most part, and Chinese brands are well represented (you’ll find Li Ning, 361 Du, Daphne etc. here). Besides the established brands, you’ll also find a number of random “2 RMB stores” that sell magazines and the like. One thing that is rather disappointing about the street however is that nowhere along the stretch will you find stores selling traditional Nanchang produce, such as Jingdezhen porcelain or Wuyuan green tea.

A snack quarter has settled in adjacent lanes and streets, running between Shengli Pedestrian Street, Dieshan Road and Jiandeguan Street. This food quarter comes in quite handy after a long day of exploring the street. You’ll mainly find Chinese snacks from all over China here, as well as some traditional Nanchang delicacies.
