A group of Japanese nationalists swam to one of the Senkaku (Diaoyu) Islands—an archipelago at the heart of a heated territorial dispute between China and Japan—and raised Japanese flags on Sunday, August 19. According to Xinhua News Agency, following reports of the incident, anti-Japanese protests and demonstrations have broken out in multiple cities across mainland China and Hong Kong, including Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Shenyang, Hangzhou, Harbin and Qingdao. The incident came mere days after Tokyo deported 14 pro-Beijing protesters for landing on one of the islands on August 15 in a bid to promote Chinese sovereignty.
