Beijing covers 16,410.54 square kilometers with a mountainous area occupying 10,417.5 square kilometers, which accounts for 62% of the city’s land. Approximately 38% of the total area is flatland. In 2010, Beijing City Government merged the former Dongcheng District, Chongwen District, Xicheng District and Xuanwu District to form two new districts –the present Dongcheng District and Xicheng District. Beijing’s population has reached 19.62 million (by the end of 2010) with 16.86 million residing in the urban area, which accounts for 85.9% of the total population. All 56 ethnic groups are represented in Beijing with the majority being Han (95.9%). Hui, Manchu, Mongol, and Korean account for a population of more than 10,000 each.
