Chengdu Transport - Introduction

Chengdu is a vital transportation hub for southwest China since it provides a passageway to much of western China, including Tibet, Kunming and Qinghai. The city is easily reached by air and land.

Chengdu's International Airport is located 16 km outside of the city center. Currently, the airport is one of the busiest airports in the nation, with flights to most major domestic cities and numerous international destinations.

As one of the largest rail hubs in southwest China, Chengdu has three railway stations that offer routes to many major Chinese cities, such as Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Guangzhou, and Urumqi. Chengdu's road system is considered extremely advanced compared to its neighboring cities in southwest China. Highways from Chengdu to Chongqing and Leshan have dramatically reduced travel time and improved transportation infrastructure. Most of Chengdu’s expressways and highways radiate from the city center or ring roads that encircle the city.

Traveling within Chengdu is facilitated by a well-developed ring road system and efficient public transport. A light rail system is under construction as a measure to control pollution and improve transport convenience.

I remember the north railway station (火车北站) very well, my hotel was somewhere nearby.
