The selfie stick is a must have item for most Chinese tourists, however many museums in Beijing are unhappy with this newest trend. Yesterday, the Forbidden City, the Capital Museum and the National Art Museum all announced new restrictions on the use of selfie sticks. According to the tourist sites, selfie sticks are dangerous because tourists tend to accidentally hit each other with them in crowded places. Museums are also worried that tourists will knock over cultural relics on display while trying to take a selfie.
The Forbidden City has advised visitors to refrain from using selfie sticks. Tourists to the Forbidden City are stopped from bringing the devices into the museum in order to protect its artifacts. The Forbidden City is characterized by narrow corridors, stairs filled with tourists and crowded exhibition halls; add selfie sticks into the mix, and you get a recipe for disaster. The museum has strongly recommended that tourists not use selfie sticks in narrow and crowded areas for safety reasons.
The Capital Museum has clearly stated that self sticks are not allowed in the museum and is drawing up the relevant provisions to ban the devices.
