Guangzhou Transport - Introduction

As China's southern gateway, Guangzhou is a major air, rail and water hub. Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN) is located approximately 28 km outside the city center. Currently Guangzhou’s airport offers over 100 domestic and 30 international destinations, and is China's third largest airport after Beijing and Shanghai.

Guangzhou is the southern terminus of the main transportation line that connects south and north China. There are also connections to destinations in western and eastern China.
Guangzhou's intricate highway network connects the city with the Pearl River Delta and other parts of Guangdong province. The Jingzhu (Beijing–Zhuhai) Expressway passes through Guangzhou and connects the city with Beijing to the north and Zhuhai to the south. The Guangzhou–Foshan Expressway connects the city with Foshan and Zhanjiang. Bus services in Guangzhou are well developed with a number of long distance bus stations distributed throughout the city. A new cross-country highway between Guangzhou and Beijing is under construction, which will become the country's main artery for land transportation.

With its strategic location on the Pearl River, Guangzhou is a major port city that provides frequent ferries to Hong Kong, Macau and Haikou (Hainan Island).
