Two North Koreans planning to assassinate the son of Kim Jong-nam, who was poisoned in a Malaysia airport in February, have reportedly been arrested in Beijing.
Chinese police apparently disrupted a plot to kill Kim Han-sol, who is the nephew of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un.
Kim Han-sol likely fell out of favor with his uncle in 2012 when he described him as a “dictator” on Finnish TV.
He added that is personal ambition is to help the North Korean people.
The news of the latest assassination attempt comes via South Korean newspaper JoonAng Ilbo, which claims North Korean sources allege that seven agents were involved in the plot to kill Kim Han-sol.
"Special operatives belonging to the North's reconnaissance team penetrated [China] to remove Kim Han-sol, but some of them were arrested last week by the Chinese Ministry of National Security and are currently under investigation at facilities outside Beijing", the source apparently told the newspaper.
The discovery of the plot was reportedly made during the heightened security measures at the 19th Communist Party Conference, which ran for a week from Oct 18 in Beijing.
Meanwhile, two women are on trial in Malaysia for killing Kim Han-sol’s father, Kin Jong-nam, at Kuala Lumpur Airport earlier this year.
The women, who are accused of smearing VX nerve gas on Kim Jong-nam’s face, claim they thought they were taking part in a TV prank show.
Following the murder, Kim Han-sol and his family went into hiding in an unnamed country.
It has been suggested that the family remained in China under the government’s protection.
