A video showing potential police abuse in Yuzhong, Lanzhou has recently gone viral in China. In the video, a small group of men are being confronted by police. A policeman kicks one of the men, then see the person filming and make them leave.

Xiao Peng said online that the video is of his classmates from Lanzhou University of Finance and Economics. The students had gotten into an argument outside a restaurant last Monday while headed to the toilet (located outside the restaurant). The loud agreement was broken up by police.

The police demanded that Xiao Peng hand over the footage that he had filmed. He refused and the police became angry. Police started to beat Xiao Peng and his friends’ buttocks with their batons. Xiao Peng and his friends later posted photos of their bruises online.

The Lanzhou Public Security Bureau launched an investigation into the incident and found that the students’ version of the story was true. The police officer responsible has been suspended. The incident will be investigated further and the police involved will be disciplined severely according to the law.

Why are policemen and teachers only ever suspended for physical abuse? Is it impossible to fire them?
