Nostoc was originally sent as a tribute to the royal family in ancient times. It is used to flavor a number of different dishes in Qinghai, but is also recognized as an effective TCM product, used in treating high blood pressure and GI problems. Steamed egg with nostoc is a local specialty, though it is also served crispy or in soup.
