Gamer Girls Gone Wild: Female Online Gaming Partners for Hire Provide Sexual Services

Editor's Note: This article from the Chinese media takes a look at the newly emerging field of female gaming partners for hire. A recent article by Hong Kong's Ming Pao newspaper and a viral post by a female sparring partner both support rumors that female gaming partners often offer illegal sexual services in addition to game play. However, the market has potential to provide legitimate opportunities for women as well: the author interviews a woman from Wuhan that runs an above the table organization for female gaming partners with no “special services” offered.

E-sports and online gaming are huge, male-dominated fields, especially when it comes to online multi-player games. Many men want to hire women to play online games with them in order to feel less lonely or less lame. Therefore, a new career path for women was recently born: female video game partners for hire.

Sparring Partners for Hire

Hong Kong's Ming Pao reported on April 9 that female video game partners occasionally offer special, less legal, services in addition to innocent game play. Women can reportedly earn 20,000 Yuan by playing video games 15 times, but the accompanying services often offered create a legal gray area in this emerging industry.

Female video game partners offer online interactions in which the women use voice calling and texting to communicate with clients while playing online games. Partners also offer offline interactions in which the women come over and play online games in person. Online gaming partners charge on an hourly basis and women also often receive virtual gifts, and equipment in the games which often have monetary value in the real world.

The men who purchase time with female gaming partners are generally not well off financially. They are usually students and factory workers: introverts with small social circles who are not around many women. The men are happy to interact with and talk to the female gamers.

A Student Tells All

The field of work was generally unknown until recently when a woman posted about her life as a gaming partner on an online forum. The 22 year old university student said that she had been an online gaming partner for six months and often played games five or six hours a day. She wrote that she plans to continue her side work as a gaming partner even after she graduates and finds a job.

The student said that at first her customers were mostly other students. She originally played a few times and earned a few thousand Yuan. Then, she met an older, non-student who was more generous. When they played, he would “accidentally,” touch her every so often. One day, he insinuated that he would pay for more than just video games and put a stack of bills in her hand. The student liked her customer, so she agreed. Soon, she began to offer the same “special services,” to other customers who were also “good-looking,” and “generous.” If she was not a fan of the customer's looks, she would just play videos and nothing else. In six months, the student said that she earned 20,000 Yuan by playing games 15 times.

No “Extra” Services

Not all female sparring partners cross into illegal territory. 26 year old Zhang owns a business in Wuhan that matches men with female gaming partners. The women make 20-50 Yuan an hour depending on skill and can make about 6000 Yuan a month. Zhang said that the threshold for female gaming partners is very low: as long as a girl has some free time and will play games she can find clients. However, women who earn more money are skilled at both chatting with men and playing online games.

Zhang said that 20-50 Yuan per hour is a reasonable rate for female gaming partners. If the price is too high, or too low then the woman is mostly likely offering sexual services. “Some women only charge 20 Yuan per day, if they only play games, then they are basically losing money. They clearly are offering other, more expensive, add-in services on top of game play,” said Zhang.

Zhang's company does not offer sexual services even though customers ask for them all the time. “The market for gaming partners has a lot of potential, but there is no regulation,” said Zhang. She worries that the number of gaming partners offering sexual services will disrupt the online gaming market, and that legitimate businesses like her own will suffer.

Why are you guys so jealously mad? Just because you don't speak Chinese doesn't mean that you can't have part of the fun. I'm sure many of those gaming girls speak English. So stop bitching and go for it. ;)

I've never played any online game where you need to pay for membership or an account. I play tons of games, but all offline and mostly pirated. I don't need any form of gratifying interaction when playing, and that's prabably the main difference with MMORPG players. I did notice that Chinese have an affinity for gambling and paid games, even installing pinball-type games for 3-year-olds in shops. For a clear-thinking person, it should be a visible boundary you never cross because it opens a pandora's box of expenses. For Chinese, anything that enough other people are doing becomes mainstream and acceptable.

Chinese men have honour and integrity. This is what is lacking a lot in the west. So foreigners have such problems when they come to China and try to understand the culture of dating.
