QS Global Education Group recently released its 14th “QS Asian University Rankings” for 2016. The National University of Singapore was ranked first place, followed by the University of Hong Kong, and Nanyang Technological University. Tsinghua University was ranked highest in Mainland China and 5th in Asia. Peking University was ranked 9th.
China dominated the Asian university rankings. 124 universities in the top 350 are in China. 82 are in Mainland China, 7 are in Hong Kong, 34 are in Taiwan and one is in Macau. Japan had 74 universities in the top 350 and South Korea had 54.
26 Mainland Chinese universities were included in the top 100. These included Tsinghua University (5), Peking University (9), Fudan University (11), Shanghai Jiaotong University (24), Wuhan University (44). Wuhan University moved 14 spots up the rankings from the previous year.
The rankings are based on a comprehensive survey of international universities. Universities are ranked on the basis on nine factors which include research, teaching, graduate employment, and academic influence (international and within the Asian region).
