China Facing Big Data Talent Shortage

Although China has the world’s highest number of Big Data professionals, the sector is still experiencing a major talent shortage, according to a new report.

The Global Big Data Development and Analysis 2019 report, compiled by Chengdu Big Data Association and several other industry partners, revealed on Sunday that the Middle Kingdom is now home to 59.5 percent of the world’s data professionals. This compares to 22.4 percent in the United States, the country with the next biggest industry workforce.

However, while 0.41 percent of the US workforce is employed in Big Data, that compares to just 0.23 percent in China. The two economic giants in fact both have a lower percentage of their workforce in the industry than countries such as South Korea (0.43 percent), Finland (0.84 percent) and Israel (1.12 percent).

China has been working towards a vast pool of Big Data resources in the past few years, with initiatives to incorporate the technology into various fields, including government, transport, education, retail and health. As a result, white papers on the subject produced in China increased from 3.4 percent in 2015 to 22.8 percent last year, while the citation rate of these papers also shot up from 1.8 percent to 20.8 percent within the same timeframe. China’s white paper citation rate has now surpassed that of the United States.

The study compared the government policies and programs, business development, information sharing and innovation abilities of the world’s leading Big Data countries.

Copying software and technology is hard work, especially when the copied stuff is outdated and useless when you finally master the principles and nobody wants to use it or buy it anymore. Evolution in technology is faster than a season of a tv series.
