Fun with the Kids: Family Activities in Xiamen

Fun with the Kids: Family Activities in Xiamen

While Beijing is steeped in culture and Shanghai is synonymous with style, Xiamen stands out as a charming city with a small town feel. In fact, life in laid-back Xiamen makes it one of the most child-friendly cities in China.

If you walk along the streets, you will find children as young as seven years old walking to school or taking the public bus on their own. If you ride on the public bus with a baby or young child in tow, you will find at least three people standing up to give up their seat for you. And as a booming town with a young population, Xiamen has a lot to offer young families with kids.

If you're looking for the proverbial "village" to raise your child, then Xiamen is that village.

1) A walking adventure at Gulangyu Islet (鼓浪屿)
The crown jewel of Xiamen, take a breezy, ferry ride at Lundu Ferry Terminal (轮渡码头) or hop on a speedboat for a round-the-island trip. At Gulangyu, buy a "passport", a cute souvenir from the street vendors, for kids to collect stamps at almost every stop on the islet.

The Xiamen Underwater World has a dolphin and sea lion performance and a glimpse of around 400 types of marine life from around the world. Live seafood displayed in front of seafood restaurants, a hike up Sunlight Rock (日光岩), the highest point of the island, a piano museum and quaint little shops selling Chinese handicraft – kids will have lots to explore around the twisty, cobblestone streets under shady banyan trees of this islet.

Avoid " Expert International Education" with jobs in Xiamen / Fuzhou .high schools and colleges. Innumerable problems my wife had with this company and I ended up having to spend a lot of time and money getting her out of there and back to UK. Avoid. China seems to be getting less and less hospitable. Sad
