Swim, Drink and Be Merry: Summer Fun in Shanghai

Swim, Drink and Be Merry: Summer Fun in Shanghai
By Trey Archer , eChinacities.com

Daylight hours are longer, summer vacations are booked, and the heat and humidity is suffocating – it’s summer in Shanghai! But just because you’re looking forward to going home or taking a trip to somewhere exotic doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy Shanghai summers for what they’re worth. Actually, the city is packed with fun alternatives. Here are of our favorite summer activities in Shanghai.

1) Pudong Shangri-la Pool PartyView In Map

There are various pool parties, some being just one-timers, but the grand opening of the weekly event at the Pudong Shangri-la promises to be consistent and classy. Starting June 22, from 12:00-18:00,, the luxury hotel will kick off its long-awaited pool parties. The 150 RMB entrance ticket gets you a free glass of champagne, access to the pool and beats from special guests DJs.

2) Terrace Bars

If you’re looking to dry off from the pool, try one of Shanghai’s European-style terrace bars. They’re the perfect place to pass a lazy summer day, enjoying the peaceful garden scenery over a few cocktails with friends. Our two favorites are Azzurra and Garden Restaurant. For great wine and Italian snacks, hit up Azzurra. For live piano and violin performances, try Garden Restaurant.

3) Water Parks

Water parks are the perfect options for families with children, and luckily there are several to choose from in Shanghai. Dino Beach is one of the largest outdoor water parks in all of Asia, and it truly resembles a beach with surfing, slides, banana boats and jet skiing. Maya Beach at the Happy Valley amusement park boasts over 30 different water-themed activities (wave pools, slides, you name it) and is about twice the size of Dino Beach.

OK, so we had to add another pool option... The New World Hotel is starting a new swim and brunch promotion. The first 30 people to book a Sunday brunch at the hotel’s Nong Café get to use the pool for free afterwards all day! It’ll run about 200 RMB for the all you can eat buffet and 238 RMB if you’re looking for free flow house wine. There’s also a bar in the pool if you want to keep the buzz strong.

5) Live Music

So already it seems like your summer days will be filled with pool parties, water slides and cocktails. So what about the nights, you ask? Don’t worry, this is Shanghai, you’ll never have to worry about your nights being dull. Summer is a great time for jamming out to live music, so try Yuyintang – one of the oldest and most popular underground music joints in the city – or the House of Blues and Jazz for something a little less grungy. Check the websites to see which local or international acts are headlining.

6) Art Exhibitions

Shanghai’s summer can really take a toll on your health. There’s only so much free-flow brunches and sunburns one can take. To take a break and get a dose of intellectualism, check out The Ninth Wave Art Exhibition (Aug 8- Oct 26). The show is at the Power Station of Art’s first solo artist exhibition, featuring the world famous Cai Guoqiang.
