China seems to have got its locally-transmitted Covid-19 infections under control ahead of the start of Chinese New Year this week. On Sunday, the National Health Commission reported just one local infection, while that number dropped to zero today.
Multiple places that found themselves the most affected by the latest spike in cases, including Beijing, Shanghai and Hebei, are for now clear of local infections. Experts say this is an indication that the virus is under control ahead of the start of Chinese New Year on Friday, which usually marks the biggest annual migration of people in the world. This year, however, in a bid to quell the spread of the virus, the government has asked citizens to remain where they work rather than return to their home towns to see family.
After more than 2,000 domestic cases were reported across the country since the start of the latest outbreak on January 2, only one new domestic case was reported in northeast China’s Jilin province on Sunday. There were, however, two locally transmitted asymptomatic infections, which are recorded separately under the Chinese system.
Today, no new local infections are being reported by the National Health Commission. There are also only 14 newly confirmed imported cases in the entire country, namely seven in Shanghai and seven in Guangdong. There is, however, one new domestic asymptomatic infection.
Today marks the ninth consecutive day that Beijing has seen no local infections. As a result, local authorities have started to lift the isolated lockdowns in the city’s Daxing district. Shanghai has also downgraded one of its medium-risk areas in Huangpu to low-risk. Meanwhile, Hebei has resumed business as usual after its daily increases were brought down to zero following an average daily increase of almost 80 in the middle of January.
