China Declares Victory Over Covid Again as All High Risk Areas Downgraded
Feb 19, 2021 By eChinacities.com

The Chinese government has once again declared victory over Covid-19 after all of the country’s high-risk areas were downgraded. Yesterday, Heilongjiang in the northeast of the country downgraded the last two high-risk areas in China to low risk. That just leaves three medium-risk areas in the country, namely in Tonghua, Jilin province, Suihua in Helongjiang and Shijiazhuang in Hebei. Shanghai's last remaining medium risk area was downgraded today.

According to the National Health Commission, China has not yet seen a surge in Covid-19 cases as a result of New Year travel. There were 11 new confirmed cases reported yesterday, all of which were imported from abroad. From February 11 to 17, the official Chun Jie holiday, only one local infection was reported in northern Hebei province.

China’s state media claims the latest numbers rebuke suggestions in Western media of a virus resurgence over the holiday. "With no cluster infections reported during the holiday season, even with more personnel flow and more group gatherings taking place, it is safe to say that China has declared victory in containing the coronavirus for the holiday season," Yang Zhanqiu, deputy director of the pathogen biology department at Wuhan University, told the Global Times.

Although the government advised people to stay in the cities where they worked and not travel to their home towns for Chinese New Year as usual, tens of millions still made trips across the country. As Covid-19 can take two weeks or more to incubate, we may have to wait a little longer until we see the full effect of the migration.
