Open Wide! Good Dentists in Shanghai

Open Wide! Good Dentists in Shanghai
By Trey Archer , eChinacities.com

This article really hits the heart… or should I say gums? Not to get too graphic, but after cracking my back molar and suffering through an extraordinary amount of pain, I quickly realized that I needed to have dental surgery ASAP. I sent a mass WeChat out to all my friends and asked colleagues, but no one seemed to have any good recommendations. Finally, after a day’s worth of nonstop pounding pain, my Chinese colleague found a place for me. To make a long story short, I had a root canal procedure at a clean, certified dental clinic, and so far everything is back to normal.

Accidents happen, so in case you find yourself in my position after a heavy chomp on a chopstick, or if you’re just looking for a good teeth cleaning or another procedure, I’ll save you the trouble and list the best dental offices in the Pearl of the Orient to keep your teeth pearly white.

Note: all of the places I’ve mentioned offer more or less the same standard services, from braces and brackets to teeth cleaning, cosmetic surgery and, of course, root canals.

1) Bayer

This is the place I visited, so I can speak about them first hand. The branch I went to was the one near Jing’an Temple, but they have a dozen offices all throughout Shanghai. This is good because there’s probably one near you, and in case you move to a new neighborhood, your former office will be able to transfer your files easily. The environment is clean and professional, and as mentioned in the intro they did a great job, so I highly recommend them. Check their website for the branch nearest you.

2) The French Dentist

If you’re from France, another French speaking country, or just want to practice your French while getting your teeth bleached, this is the place for you. But wait, there’s more! Despite the name, they also have German, English and Korean speakers, obviously catering to the city’s expat communities with Western staff. It also might be worth mentioning that they have speech therapy as well. They’re on par with Western standards, but that does come with a higher price tag.

3) iSmile Dental

Part of the Japanese owned Tokushinkai Group, iSmile is (naturally) very Japanese in style. With Chinese and Japanese staff, this chain has top-of-the-line modern equipment, is as sterile as a hospital, and has a very corporate vibe (which can be a plus or a minus, depending on your style). They have several clinics all around Shanghai, so check the website for the one nearest you. It also might be worth mentioning that there are branches in nearby Suzhou and Wuxi.

4) New York Dental

If you live out in “Pu Jersey,” New York Dental is probably your best bet. They have an international team of dentists and offer a wide range of services. Don’t worry, if you cross the “bridge and tunnel” they have a clinic in Puxi also.

5) J Smiles

Here is a good, non-chain dentistry located in the expat enclave of Jing’an. Its non-corporate attitude (unlike iSmile) is a plus for many, and just like all the others listed here they offer an array of services with Western trained professionals.

6) Pure Smile

Pure Smile is listed as an “orthodontist and dentist in Shanghai,” and given that it’s tucked away in Hongqiao along with a large contingency of expat families with kids and teens, you can already see that they put a heavy emphasis on braces. If your kids need a touch up to get that “pure smile,” this is it. There’s also a clinic in Pudong, again, close to the encampment of foreign families.

I went to French Dentist, and the doctor there is very good. The doctor was on time, the service is great, and they saved my gum problem!

Don t go to French Dentist. Absolutely zero customer care. They would give you an appointment and not show up. No explaination given. Chose another one, at least you ll be treated.
