Sober Fun: Non-Bar Related Nightlife Ideas in Shanghai

Shanghai is a city that never sleeps – a metropolis that pulsates with even more excitement as the night progresses. While Shanghai's bar and club scene is certainly one of the most bustling ones in China, not all after-dark fun has to necessarily involve drinking. Here are a few pointers to some alternative nightlife options before the cold winter creeps in, from its riverbanks, to its skies, to its beaches.

Huangpu River Ferry Night ToursView In Map
Ferryboats offering tours along the Huangpu River are located right behind the Oriental Pearl Tower. From the south side of the Shanghai International Convention Center, walk to the end of Fenghe Lu to find a small booth where they sell tickets for the Huangpu River Ferry Tours. Tours begin at 18:30 and run every hour on the half hour until 21:30. Ferries tend to be more crowded during the 19:30 and 20:30 time slots.

The entire trip lasts 40 minutes and you'll be able to catch all the must-see landmarks along the Bund, including the Oriental Pearl Tower, Zhengdan Plaza, Shanghai World Financial Center, and more, while enjoying all the comforts the ferry has to offer. The 18:30 ferry offers a special sight as at exactly 19:00, a bell sounds throughout the Bund, signaling building lights to turn on in order from north to south – officially announcing nightfall over Shanghai.

Ferris Wheel Ride at Jingjiang Amusement ParkView In Map
Visiting Jingjiang Park at nighttime will prove to be a very romantic experience. Riding on the Ferris wheel, 100 metres above Shanghai, you will see the expressway curving and meandering into the distance like fiery dragon in the night. Sparkling lights around the Lupu and Xupu Bridges add a fairy tale-like mood to the nighttime scenery. Every compartment on the Ferris wheel is equipped with air-conditioning and sufficient ventilation, so you needn't worry about the summertime heat.

Apart from the Ferris wheel, you can enjoy a spin on the merry-go-around, pirate ship, space shuttle simulator, and more.
