Things to Do on a Rainy Day in Shanghai

Things to Do on a Rainy Day in Shanghai
By Andrea Scarlatelli , eChinacities.com

With this freakish weather (Having to wear a coat in April? Seriously?), you never know when a rainy day is going to come and obliterate a perfectly pleasant sunny afternoon. The more prepared you are to stave off a boring rainy day, the better. So here are some ideas to maximize your fun while minimizing the effects of the rain.

Indoor rock climbing
Resist the urge to just veg out on the couch and get moving! Showing off your skills (or lack thereof) is a fun, energizing, and yes, even healthy way to spend your waterlogged afternoon. There are plenty of great places to climb, including the Masterhand Rock Climbing Club and the Shanghai Stadium Rock-Climb Sports Centre, the latter of which has over 100 different climbing paths on their 20 meter high wall – so you’re pretty much guaranteed to never get bored!

Break out the board games
If you think board games are for little kids, you’ve obviously been out of the loop for a while. There a lots of places popping up all over Shanghai where lovers of old school board games get together and play. It’s a great atmosphere – groups of (what I’m guessing are) university students, helping each other out and having a blast learning new games. Don’t worry if you have no board game experience – people there are always more than happy to teach you the rules. If you’re feeling brave, join a group of Chinese players - it’s a great chance to brush up on your Chinese! There’s no need to bring your own games either – these places are fully equipped with all the essentials like Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, and Munchkin. Never heard of them? Get thee to a board game gathering pronto!

Drink and Drive (on an indoor racetrack, of course)
Somewhere out there, someone thought to themselves, “What would be better than driving a go kart around a track?” The answer? “Beer.” And so the newest edition to Shanghai’s go karting scene was born. Stampede Karting is just one of the tracks that allows you to indulge your need for speed while also indulging your other pressing need. It’s a fun side of Shanghai that not many people go to see.

Host a cooking party
This is one of my favourite activities to do with a group of friends, and not just on a rainy day. Pick the person with the best kitchen or just rotate houses, then pick a menu where everyone can participate. It’s a blast making the food (copious amounts of music and wine are usually involved) and then you all get to enjoy eating your fabulous creations afterwards. It’s easy to find great, simple Chinese recipes online (my favorites are chinese-recipes.net, rasamalaysia.com/chinese-food-recipes-chinese-recipes, and healthychineserecipes.com). For those who like a little more guidance with their cooking, there’s a few places around that will give private cooking lessons to your whole group. It’s a bit pricey, but if you get enough friends to go, splitting the cost makes it a tad more reasonable. And don’t think you’re limited to cooking Chinese food at these workshops – they teach everything from French to Mexican, to Vietnamese.

Bowling
Ahh, bowling – the favourite pastime for middle schoolers. But trust me, it’s even more fun as an adult. Wearing the funny shoes, laughing at your friends as they get gutter ball after gutter ball, drinking beer, playing pool... I’ve found the bigger the group, the better. Doesn’t the power of competition bring everyone together? Oh, and never underestimate the power of funny shoes.
