1) Cityfu
Cityfu is one of the most popular apps for those who want to be in the know – now. With “real time” information on all the latest parties, happy hours, and events, you can find out everything you need to know while on the move. Its database of venues comes from the ever-popular City Weekend site and it even includes a GPS map that shows you what’s going on nearest your current location.

Price: Free

2) Explore Shanghai
Hands down the best guide to Shanghai’s metro system in existence, Explore Shanghai can show you everything you’ve wanted to know about navigating the subway. Look at the map to figure out where you want to go, then just plug in your starting and ending points. This app will give you the fare price for your journey and tells you when the next subway car is arriving. The best part is it’s constantly updating as more lines are added, so you never have to worry about it being out of date.

Price: 2.49 USD

3) Shanghai Taxi Guide
Not that big into public transportation? No problem – the Shanghai Taxi Guide will help you get to your destination like a pro. Enter in where you want to go, and the app will show you distance from where you are at the moment. It will then give you a reasonable taxi fare based on time, distance, etc. It will even translate your destination into Chinese to show the taxi driver in case your Mandarin isn’t quite up to snuff.

Price: 0.99 USD

4) Catch Your Bus Shanghai
While we’re on the topic of public transportation, the Catch Your Bus Shanghai is the definitive app for the oft complicated (and frustrating) bus system. Search for the number of the bus you want to take (or think you might want to take) and the app will show you its exact route, start to finish. Plug in all the buses near you to find out where you can go on the cheap and feel utterly confident about the journey.

Price: 1.99 USD

5) Smart Shanghai
Yes, everyone’s favourite Shanghai website, Smart Shanghai, now has an app. As you would expect, it includes pretty much everything the website offers but from the convenience of the road – including a database of over 4,000 venues, the latest reader reviews, and those snarky editorials that you know you love to read.

Price: 4.99 USD
