Exploring Shenyang’s Markets and Bazaars at Taiyuan Street

Shenyang’s Taiyuan Street (太原街) is well known for its rich history and for being a prosperous center of trade that has weathered with the ages. After nearly a century of development, Taiyuan Street is now a well integrated commercial district that expands around Zhonghua Lu, Taiyuan Street and Zhongshan Lu. The area showcases mostly large malls with specialty shops interlaced throughout; this commercial district is surrounded by wholesale markets and bazaars, as well as numerous centers to satisfy business, dining, entertainment and recreation needs. The district extends over 3,950 meters (2.45 miles) and is one of the most prosperous commercial districts in Shenyang.

You can still find older Chinese shops on Taiyuan Street that have been in business since the last century. With countless new venues springing up around, the older shops may be easily overlooked by consumers but these stores haven't lost their older appeal or the attractive, quality merchandise. For example, Qiulin Foods, an old shop housed in a European-style building on Zhongshan Road, has always been popular with their special selection of old-time favorite Chinese desserts. Many of the store’s goodies have been enjoyed by generations of Shenyang residents and most still frequent Qiulin Foods for the familiar tastes they loved as kids. Shenyang Feiweilou is another old establishment that sells famous snacks, unique to the locals, including Beiyang dumplings, Shandong stir-fried dumpling, Liliangui smoked meat wrapped in Chinese pancake and Beiyang shumai (steamed pork dumpling). Other older establishments in the area include Fengtai Fur Coats Shopping Plaza, Zhongshan Dagong Watches & Clocks Mall, Shenyang Cuihua Gold & Jewelry Shop and Laoguangming Clock & Eyeglasses Shop.

Aside from the older shops, Taiyuan Street also has its collection of high-rise shopping establishments and multinational brands. There are actually several malls, hotels and office buildings that house these popular shops. To the west are Zhongxing Commercial Plaza, Isetan Mall and H&M’s northeast China flagship store. To the east are the Wuzhou Plaza (Hualiang, Wuzhou Shopping Center, Dongshun Department Store), New World Department Store from Hong Kong, Wanda Plaza, Chaohui Shopping Center, Parkson, etc. Each of the above mentioned shopping centers have unique qualities when it comes to carrying specific items that cater to different shopping needs. For example, the first floor at Zhongxing Plaza carries the largest selection of cosmetic goods in the city, Parkson has the most exclusive array of retail brands and is a favorite shopping place for the fashionable consumers and New World Department Store caters to upscale shoppers and has the largest collection of luxury clothing brands in city. If it is less pricey clothing you're after, then there is a clothing market at Shishang Dixia (Fashion Underground), but you need to have a keen eye to distinguish quality from inferior knock-off makes and a sharp tongue for bargaining with shop owners.

Aside from these locations, Nanyi Road, which is south of the district, has a large shopping mall carrying various hardware items and electronic goods. A wholesale market that sells quality eyeglasses at very cheap prices is near the Cultural Palace and on Nan'er Road is another wholesale market selling various food items and condiments. These bazaars and markets offer a variety of merchandise and are located on the outer border of Taiyuan Street and are enclosed within this commercial district.
