With Sea World undergoing a massive remodeling project, many foreigners in Shenzhen are looking for trendy, delicious Western restaurants that don’t feature the constant din of construction work. Luckily there’s a little-known street within walking distance of Sea World for cuisine and atmosphere akin to that of home. That spot? A street called Wanghai Road (望海路).

Replacements—some may even say improvements—for everything from the popular bar McCawley’s to the established Italian eateries Top and Grissini can be found along this quiet, not-so-crowded road. Featuring eight restaurant bars, three cafes and one bakery, the area is perfect for those looking for an environment featuring burgers, steaks, burritos, pizzas and ESPN.

A bar where everybody knows your name, Cheers provides some of the friendliest service in Shenzhen. But service can only go so far, and Cheers also features daily specials (steaks, ribs and drinks to name a few), delivery from popular pizza joint NYPD, and one of the best hamburgers in the city for a little more than you’d pay for a Big Mac at McDonald’s. And if you’re interested in keeping up with the going-ons in the American sports world, Cheers normally plays American football, college basketball, and ESPN—they’ve even been known to take requests for particular games and play them at a specific time. A great answer to McCawley’s if you’re questioning where to go.

2) Senor Frogs View In Map
Wanghai’s answer to your Mexican cuisine craving, this restaurant bar has the same set-up as Cheers—ESPN, daily specials for drinks and meals—but sets itself apart with a menu featuring everything from burritos to turkey club sandwiches to Mexican-style sweet potato fries. The portions are generous, as are the prices, and it’s a great substitute to other popular Mexican restaurants in Shenzhen.

3) Jordan’s Bar View In Map
Another bar on this oft-overlooked road with a menu of Italian and Middle-Eastern origin, Jordan’s Bar separates itself not only through its food offerings but by offering free French bread with Tapenade to anyone willing to have a drink there. As for the cuisine, it offers tastes of Greece, Italy, Turkey and Lebanon along with US fixtures (chicken nuggets), Mexican (quesadillas) and even English (fish and chips). The range of varying cuisines might be overwhelming to some, but Jordan’s highlight is its pizzas, which come in a variety of forms from classic pepperoni and cheese to a breakfast pizza with eggs, ham and sausage. On top of that, Jordan’s Bar is the only place in Wanghai to enjoy Hookah.

4) AulonView In Map
For those looking for a more sophisticated, cosmopolitan scene, Aulon fills the void quite nicely with an extensive wine list and a chill, laid back atmosphere full of couches, recliners and conversation.
