Too Much is Never Enough: Buffets in Wuhan

Too Much is Never Enough: Buffets in Wuhan

Eike Von Repkow described the experience of eating at a buffet eloquently back in 1220 when he said, “He who comes first, eats first.” There is nothing more thrilling than battling it out in a crowded buffet for chow or the thrill of discovery when careening the tables for something to eat.

Having grown up in the United States, one of the fattest countries in the world, and struggling for my own individual portion of grub against behemoth sized people with their own gravitational pull, I know what Eike Von Repkow is talking about—if you want to eat at a buffet and get your hands on the good vitals then you've got to get there first. That's why today I'm going to introduce some buffets in Wuhan to help my hungry expats satisfy their monstrous hungers. So go friends, armed with empty stomachs and a true appetite for destruction.

As with everything else in Wuhan, there is an overabundance of buffets to choose from, with each one specialising in hot pot, seafood or Western food. So the selections in where you want to eat all depends on your taste buds, because whatever it is it's out there and waiting for you to come over, grab it, and stick it in your mouth.

1) Brazil Barbecue Restaurant
Let me ask you a question—do you like meat? If you're a devilishly hungry carnivore then you need to stop by this buffet. Now I've never been to Brazil, so I can't say how authentic it is, but it tastes pretty good.

In terms of dishes, vegetables and deserts they really don't have much to offer. One alcove houses everything and it is typically on limited supply. If BBR is busy, you might not actually get too much from there—which is one of its major drawbacks. Along one narrow wall you will find various hot foods, rice and soups. Salads, freshly sliced fruits, cold meats and a small selection of desserts are also offered, but tend to disappear quickly during the course of a busy lunch. The one bright spot of the BBR is the meat. They offer nearly 20 kinds of barbecued meats cooked up by Brazilian chefs and an additional 40 other selections.

The inside is nice and festive with the walls painted yellow and green, and has mounted television screens positioned everywhere playing all sorts of Brazilian concerts and events. If you're going out on a date and want to have a romantic talk while eating, don't go here because this place is loud and Rumba crazy. I would also like to make a recommendation in terms of seating. I've been here a number of times and if you want to get access to the meats you best keep Eike Von Repkow's words in mind about being first. Waiters will bring meats out to tables to cut it and if you're positioned too far from the kitchen then the chances of getting some quality meat is drastically reduced.

The Brazil Barbecue Restaurant has locations all over Wuhan, so find the one closest to you and enjoy some meat, meat, meat. Venue info here.

2) Golden Horse Gate 金马门 View In Map
If Brazil is famous for its enormous quantity of meats then Golden Horse Gate is famous for its seafood. This is the place to go for a romantic evening or to unwind with friends and family after a hectic work week.

Inside, patrons will find a lavish interior with black marble tables, leather seats, and plasma flat screen televisions. I know, people don't go to a buffet to watch TV, they go to eat, so how about the food? Well, they offer shark fin soup, Thai style crab, clams, sushi, snake soup and even turtle. One of their most famous offerings is their shrimp dumpling, which should not be missed for any reason. And if the Mayans are right about this being our last year on Earth and you find yourself in Wuhan, it's your duty to stop by and sample some.

Now I'm a big fan of sweets and my biggest vice would have to be ice cream. I love it. When I hit a buffet I love to consume a fair share of cakes and of course, ice cream. Most buffets in Wuhan either offer a no-name brand ice cream, others have Nestle, but Golden Horse Gate has the mother of all brands available for consumption—Haagen Dazs! Not only can you enjoy a great dining atmosphere and delicious seafood, but you also get to stuff your face with Haagen Dazs.

Keep in mind, however, that prices for this particular buffet are much higher than the Brazilian Barbecue, with lunch being 148 RMB per person and dinner being 168 RMB per person. There are price hikes on holidays such as Valentine's Day and Christmas. Discounts happen occasionally, but rarely. So if that sounds like something you want to try and the price fits your budget, go for it, because you won't be disappointed.

3) Grand View Revolving Café at Ramada Plaza Tianlu HotelView In Map
Another great buffet that one should visit while in Wuhan is in the Grand View Revolving Café situated in the five-star Ramada Plaza Tianlu Hotel in Hankou District. A few things that make this buffet an interesting one to visit is that it rotates. Sitting up high, it overlooks the entire area. At night you can see all the beautiful lights, the lake, and the entire vicinity. It's picturesque and makes for a very romantic setting. The staff inside are friendly and some even speak English, which always makes a dining experience a little smoother.

As far as the food goes, it's pretty nifty. They have a chocolate fondue fountain, pizza, and even German bratwurst fried up on a grill. They have all the usual goodies: clams, spaghetti, salads, soups, deserts and mini-hamburgers. The food is good, but the location and view is what makes this particular buffet stand out in Wuhan. Oh, and the wonderful chocolate fondue fountain is a huge plus.

So as you can see from the list above, there are some exceptional buffets in Wuhan. The above list is short and sweet, but keep in mind that this is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. There are countless places to eat and other buffets to explore, but the ones above should be on the top of your list. The next time you visit one of these locations remember what Eike Von Repkow said and get there first, so you can wine and dine like royalty!
